Community Foundations and the Environment
Community Foundations of Canada (CFC) is increasing local environmental action in communities across Canada, with support from the J.W. McConnell Family Foundation.
The Community Foundations in the Environment program includes local, regional and national projects that help community foundations work in partnership to tackle key environmental challenges.
Objectives
- Build local environmental endowment funds
- Increase the amount and effectiveness of grants to organizations working on environmental issues
- Provide environmental leadership by acting as educators and convenors
- Bring a sustainability perspective to all aspects of foundations’ work and operations
- Encourage and facilitate joint work amongst community foundations to mirror the scope and complexity of environmental challenges
Initiatives
Impact
- More than $5 million in permanent environmental endowment funds raised by community foundations across Canada
- Contributed more than $2.6 million in grants to environmental organizations
- Created regional partnerships with other organizations to approach complex environmental challenges and raise public awareness
- Engaged youth in environmental learning and action
