Ontario Land Trust Alliance

Community Foundations of Canada (CFC) and the Ontario Land Trust Alliance are partners on a province-wide campaign to raise awareness and funds for the ongoing stewardship of preserved lands in Ontario.

Community foundations across Ontario are teaming up with local land trusts on the Care for the Land You Love campaign to maintain the more than 60,000 acres of special lands under land trust care.

Objectives

  • Build local Land Stewardship Funds to create a permanent source of revenue for local stewardship activities such as clean up trails, repair fences, plant trees and control erosion.
  • Increase profile of lands under care and build understanding of the issues and cost involved in ongoing maintenance.
  • Encourage donors to act now by providing a matching opportunity. Community foundations will match every dollar raised, up to a maximum of $20,000.
  • Provide enough income to steward for approximately 50% of the land cared for by land trusts.

Impact

  • The partnership, which is supported by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, involves 14 community foundations and land trusts.
  • Together they have raised more than $300,000.
  • Participants have built skills in fund development and increased their knowledge of the local environment.
  • New partnerships have led to increased profile of environmental issues as in this YouTube video created by the London Community Foundation in partnership with the Thames Talbot Land Trust and the Newport Forest.
